This role sits at the intersection of human-centered design, data-intensive workflows, and front-end engineering. The ideal candidate will help make complex research and operational experiences clear, efficient, accessible, and trustworthy for a diverse set of NIH users.MEANINGFUL WORK AND PERSONAL IMPACTYou will help shape the data lakehouse user experience end to end, from discovery and workflow mapping through design, implementation, and iteration. Working closely with product owners, engineers, data and platform stakeholders, and leadership, you will translate platform needs into intuitive interfaces that support data discovery, access, governance, and collaboration.What You’ll DoUX/UI DesignLead human-centered design efforts for lakehouse workflows, from discovery through deliveryConduct user research, usability testing, and stakeholder interviews to inform design decisions for researchers, analysts, and platform administratorsCreate wireframes, prototypes, journey maps, user flows, and interaction models for data search, filtering, access, and review experiencesDesign interfaces that help users understand complex data, metadata, permissions, and status information with clarity and confidenceAdvocate for accessibility, inclusivity, privacy-aware design, and Section 508 complianceFront-End EngineeringBuild high-quality, scalable UI components and features that support lakehouse workflows and dashboardsImplement responsive, performant, and maintainable front-end architectureCollaborate with engineers to ensure design fidelity, technical feasibility, and consistency across the platformIntegrate with GraphQL APIs, search services, and other backend systems that power data lakehouse use experiencesContribute to design systems, component libraries, and front-end best practices for platform-wide reuseWHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED5–8+ years of experience in UX design, front-end development, or a hybrid roleStrong portfolio demonstrating human-centered design thinking and shipped digital products or data platform experiencesProficiency with modern front-end technologies, including:ReactNext.jsGraphQL / GQLReact component kitsTypeScript and component-based architectureExperience conducting user research and translating insights into actionable design decisionsExperience creating prototypes in relevant design or product toolsStrong understanding of interaction design, information architecture, usability principles, and complex workflow designPreferred QualificationsExperience supporting scientific, research, healthcare, or public-sector data platformsExperience with design systems at an enterprise scaleKnowledge of performance optimization, SSR/ISR, and modern rendering strategiesExperience designing engagement mechanisms, gamification features, or incentive-based user experiences that encourage platform adoption, data stewardship, collaboration, training completion, and effective use of enterprise data platformsExperience supporting Federal, HHS OpDiv, or NIH programs preferredSection 508 experienceGDIT IS YOUR PLACEAt GDIT, the mission is our purpose, and our people are at the center of everything we do.
