Job Description
**Title:** Nighttime Dispatcher
**Location:** Houston, Texas (supports all terminals by phone; **not a remote job**; no travel)
**Schedule:** Evening/Overnight shift (8pm\-6am; 10 hr shifts Monday \- Friday)
**Employment Type:** Full\-time
**ABOUT THE ROLE:**
Join LCG Freight’s 24/7 dispatch team supporting **Norfolk, VA; Charleston, SC; Savannah, GA; Jacksonville, FL; and Houston, TX**. While you’ll assist with **evening calls from all terminals**, this position is **physically based only in Houston**. It’s a great introduction to logistics: you’ll answer calls, **communicate clearly with drivers**, handle **standard load questions and basic equipment troubleshooting questions** per company manual, perform yard checks, and operate the yard gate for drivers coming and going.
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:**
* **Answer and log all calls** during the evening/overnight shift; resolve routine issues and **document everything**.
* **Work directly with drivers**: give clear directions, confirm appointments/gate codes, provide simple step\-by\-step guidance for **basic maintenance questions**, and follow up to close the loop.
* **Escalate appropriately**: if an issue is outside the checklist or becomes complex, **contact the on\-call manager** with a concise written summary.
* **Perform scheduled yard checks** (visual inspections, equipment notes, anomalies) and record findings in the system.
* **Open/close the yard gate** for driver traffic and verify entries/exits per procedure.
* **Paperless shift handoff:** compile a concise **digital shift report** and **email** it to the appropriate terminal contacts at shift end.
**What Success Looks Like:**
* **Zero missed or unreturned calls** and complete electronic logs.
* Drivers feel supported: clear instructions, timely updates, and respectful, professional interactions.
* Complex issues **escalated quickly** with clean notes for leadership.
* Yard checks completed on time; **smooth, safe gate operations**.
* Thorough **shift\-change emails** that enable the next shift to start strong.
**Must\-Haves:**
* **Excellent communication skills**: clear, calm phone presence; active listening; respectful, driver\-first approach; accurate written summaries.
* **Proven ability to work well with drivers**—patient, professional, and solutions\-focused, including during stressful situations.
* **Strong computer skills** (we are **paperless**): fast, accurate typing; disciplined digital note\-taking; professional **email** etiquette; able to learn dispatch/TMS tools (training provided).
* **Reliable attendance** and punctuality; comfortable **working alone** at night on\-site.
* Ability to move around the yard and work outdoors in varying weather to conduct yard checks daily.
* Valid driver’s license and ability to pass background screenings.
**Nice to Have:**
* Experience in dispatch, transportation, intermodal/drayage, or yard operations.
* Familiarity with ELDs, TMS platforms, or **basic equipment troublesho
