Principal ESG Manager

Role OverviewESS is seeking a Principal ESG Manager to play a strategic and technical leadership role across its ESG activities. This position is suited to a seasoned professional capable of leading complex ESIA processes, conducting ESG due diligence, and advising clients at a senior level, while managing multiple high-impact assignments across the region. He will be doing site visits as required depending on the projects that will be assigned to him.Key ResponsibilitiesESG Advisory & Technical LeadershipProvide expert guidance on ESG standards (IFC Performance Standards, World Bank, etc.)Support the development and implementation of ESG strategies across client projectsAct as a subject matter expert in ESIA and environmental and social risk managementESIA & E&S ManagementLead or review Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs)Oversee ESMP implementation and monitoringEnsure quality control of deliverables from consultants and partnersProject ManagementManage multiple ESG assignments simultaneouslyCoordinate with clients, consultants, and internal teamsTrack timelines, deliverables, and budgetsStakeholder EngagementSupport stakeholder engagement strategies and community relationsAdvise on grievance mechanisms, RAP/LRP processes, and social risk mitigationRecruitment & Technical SupportWork closely with internal teams to define ESG/HSEC role requirementsSupport technical screening and validation of candidatesContribute ESG insights to support client needs and business developmentReporting & GovernancePrepare ESG reports and documentationTrack KPIs and support continuous improvementAssist with audits and due diligence processesESG Due Diligence & Risk AdvisoryLead ESG due diligence for investments, acquisitions, and project financingIdentify material environmental and social risks, liabilities, and compliance gapsAdvise clients on risk mitigation strategies aligned with lender expectationsSupport audits, transaction processes, and independent reviewsRequirementsMaster’s degree (or equivalent) in Environmental Science, Social Sciences, Sustainability, or related discipline10+ years of experience in ESG / Environmental & Social roles, with significant exposure in AfricaStrong experience with ESIA processes and ESMP implementationProven project management experienceKnowledge of IFC Performance Standards and international ESG frameworksExperience in mining, energy, or infrastructure sectorsExcellent stakeholder engagement and communication skillsFluency in English required; French strongly preferredKey CompetenciesLeadership and coordinationStrong analytical and problem-solving skillsExcellent organization and reporting abilitiesAbility to work across multiple projects and culturesNice to HaveExperience in AfricaExperience with RAP/LRP implementationFamiliarity with ESG reporting frameworks (e.g., GRI)Originally posted on Himalayas
