We are hiring a Reporter to cover Scottsdale and Mesa, Ariz. as part of our growing local news initiative, which is extending our mission to America’s hometowns.Why it matters: Our Smart Brevity approach helps local readers understand what’s happening in their own backyards. This reporter will create a meaningful local presence in their market, helping readers get smarter, faster on the news that matters. Go deeper: We are looking for a skilled writer who cares deeply about local news and is obsessed with innovative ways to cover it. Requirements include:Authoring two twice-weekly Axios newsletters with potential to increase cadence that feature insights and scoops that matter most to the hyper-local audienceA command of the local market along with the sourcing necessary to illuminate busy readers about the community where they liveHelping build Axios Local and shape how the product evolvesAbility to create stories across multiple platforms, including newsletter, web and social media.Worthy of your time: Ideal candidates will embody an entrepreneurial spirit, a passion for Axios’ mission and have the following skills:Experience covering news and a deep understanding of Maricopa County.Excellent sources and ability to create new onesStrong reporting skills and comfort working independently and on deadlineAbility to decipher data, break news and create conceptual scoopsBackground in understanding local and national news coverage more broadlyA belief in and dedication to writing in Smart Brevity Starting salary for this role is in the range of $60,000 - $90,000 and is dependent on numerous factors, including but not limited to location, work experience, and skills. This range does not include other compensation benefits. Axios' compensation philosophy takes into account cost of labor differentials across the country.
