Job Description
**Job Summary**
We are seeking a detail\-oriented and technically skilled **Joint Use Engineer** to support the design, analysis, and permitting of aerial telecommunications infrastructure. The ideal candidate will perform pole loading analysis, evaluate field data, and determine structural make\-ready requirements to ensure compliance with applicable safety and engineering standards. This role requires strong knowledge of Outside Plant (OSP) engineering, aerial fiber construction, basic knowledge of power utility standards and utility coordination.
The Joint Use Engineer will collaborate with utility companies, telecom providers, and internal project teams to support the safe and efficient deployment of fiber optic networks.
**Key Responsibilities**
* Perform pole loading analysis using **O\-Calc Pro** to evaluate pole capacity and structural compliance.
* Review and interpret field data, pole surveys, and photographic documentation to determine attachment feasibility.
* Identify and recommend **make\-ready construction** requirements such as pole replacements, guying, or attachment rearrangements.
* Ensure designs meet applicable standards including **National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), RUS** and **General Order 95** where applicable.
* Design and review aerial and underground telecom routes, including riser facilities and utility crossings.
* Collaborate with electric utilities, cable providers, and telecom carriers to resolve joint\-use conflicts.
* Prepare and submit engineering documentation and permits to utility companies and regulatory agencies.
* Conduct quality control reviews of engineering designs, construction drawings, and pole loading calculations.
* Support project timelines by coordinating with project managers, fielding teams, and permitting departments.
* Maintain accurate project documentation and records within internal systems.
* May require completing tasks outside of your role description if additional support is needed across other teams \& workstreams
**Required Qualifications**
* Minimum **2 years of experience in the telecommunications or fiber\-optic construction industry**.
* **1–3 years of OSP engineering or joint\-use engineering experience**.
* Strong experience performing pole loading analysis using **O\-Calc Pro \& Poleforeman**.
* Working knowledge of aerial fiber infrastructure and utility pole attachments.
* Familiarity with field data collection platforms such as **Katapult** or **IKE**.
* Proficiency in CAD software such as **AutoCAD**.
* Strong understanding of clearance requirements and structural rules under **National Electrical Safety Code (NESC)**.
* Excellent analytical, problem\-solving, and communication skills.

**Preferred Qualifications**
* Fielding or utility pole inspection experience.
* Experience with telecom project management tools such as Varasset, IQGeo, Sitetracker, or FROGS.
