Controller – Retail & Wholesale (Full‐Time, Remote‐Friendly)About the CompanyThe Company is a 12-year old consumer brand in an outdoors category. We go to market through mass market retailers like Walmart and Dick’s Sporting Goods, marketplaces like Amazon, and direct-to-consumer as a monthly subscription box. The business was formerly a venture-backed company, and is now under new ownership and operating with a cash-flow focused strategy for long-term business viability.Position OverviewThe Company is looking for an experienced Corporate Controller to lead bookkeeping, accounting and compliance. The individual will also support high-priority strategic initiatives, FP&A and investor communications. This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer and is supported by an experienced Fractional Chief Financial Officer.Core responsibilitiesClose/process leadership – Own full cycle (AP, AR, payroll, inventory, accrued landed cost) and drive an < 8‐day close. Reporting & controls – Issue monthly/quarterly GAAP statements, variance analysis, cash‐flow forecasts, and covenant calculations; design control environment suitable for a sub‐$100 M company. Inventory & COGS – Maintain perpetual inventory, standard costs, and shrink/obsolescence reserves across 3PLs and consignment programs. Borrowing‐base & covenant management – Prepare availability certificates, eligibility testing,and collateral audits for our ABL line. Tax & compliance – Register and file U.S. multi‐state sales/use tax, franchise, and federal returns; oversee external CPA for income taxes. System ownership – Administer QuickBooks Online, Bill.com, TaxJar, SPS Commerce and any data‐warehouse connectors; spearhead new integrations. Strategic finance – Partner with CEO & Fractional CFO on budgets, SKU margin analytics, vendor negotiations, M&A diligence. What makes you the right fitTechnical depth + sleeves‐rolled‐up attitude. You’ve done the reconciliations yourself before leading others; nothing is “beneath the Controller. 8+ years in product businesses that sell to Walmart/Target and direct‐to‐consumer; comfortable with chargebacks, slotting, co‐ops. Proven ABL reporting experience (eligibility tests, inventory appraisal support). Solid command of U.S. sales/use, franchise, and federal taxes for multi‐state sellers. Data agility—excel at pulling messy CSVs/EDI files and shaping them via Excel/Sheets, PowerQuery, or SQL. Communication & judgment. Ability to state, defend, and document accounting positions with auditors, lenders, and executives. Bachelor’s in Accounting/Finance plus CPA strongly preferred; public‐accounting foundation a bonus.
